Prompt #1 : (Gender Representation in Movies)

The cultural artifact that I chose was the movie She’s the Man. The reason I chose this artifact was because this movie is known for the many stereotypes it has against boys and girls. In other words, it has an understanding from both sides and I feel like that is fair for everyone overall. This movie is one of my favorites because it holds a memory of me as a teenage girl watching and trying to understand how genders really act when they are alone in their social groups.

Prompt #2: (Analyze) Authorship- When incorporating Griswold's cultural diamond the receiving audience is a teenage audience while the creator is someone who exemplifies how we are all equal. The social world of this movie can be described as a teenage/college community where it is primarily nothing but teenagers who just moving into college. The message this movie is sending is that stereotypes can be proven false by either genders. This message was created by the genders who think they are going back and forth with these stereotypes that keeping coming up. Format- Throughout this movie it represent mainly stereotypes against women saying they can’t play as well as men and even go as far as showing men cannot flirt like women because of they way it is sexualized. The creative techniques I believe got my attention is all of the constant jokes this movies makes around all of the cliche things people think about gender norms. I find it’s because it is easier to make a mockery or something that is so talked about. Audience-  I believe people might understand this message differently if they believe the stereotypes are one hundred percent real. Depending on the audience it can be taken very offensively because of the example in the movie being very exaggerated to make the movie more appealing. Content- The lifestyle values that this message is omitting is that it has become the normal in our society to see these stereotypes as just an American lifestyle. In this movie a lot of the content given to us has to do with the things we’ve seen around teenage boys and girls in the United States. Purpose- Ultimately, I understand this message is being sent to bring awareness to certain age groups like teenagers and people in their late twenties etc. It also shows the struggle between both genders are similar because they both face challenges no matter the gender.

  1. First of all, I love this movie and I thought it was very cute but after reading your blog and looking back I noticed that they did have so many gender stereotypes. She struggled a lot to fit in and be "manly" which shows that the producers think women can't be like men, this could be because they see us as fragile or weak. It also shows that women try hard to get a man which is always portrayed in movies or music videos. Besides that I still think the movie is kind of cute.

  2. Hey Melissa! I love this movie so much, and I think it does a great job at showing both the many stereotypes that women face, but also how this movie challenges those gender stereotypes. Like how it says that women can’t play soccer as well as the men, but we see that throughout the movie she is willing and just as able to play soccer as any of the other boys. It also holds this strerotype of men too and how they can’t be sensitive and show emotions, but that in reality it is okay because everyone has emotions, not everyone is a monster haha. I really liked how you analyzed this movie because I never would’ve thought of this movie so in dept in that way. Thanks for sharing!

  3. I think this movie did a really great job of showing gender in a new way. One of the ways was with the guy she ends up rooming with, who she ultimately develops a crush on. Their conversation about trying to get a girl and she realizes the facade he put up about being a flirty guy who just wants a hot girl is fake. Overall this movie is quite an empowering movie for young girls as it teaches them to not take being treated as less than a boy, that they can be just as great or even better at something than a boy.

  4. Hey Melissa! I love this movie, its so funny but I also can see all the different stereotypes such as girls can not be like guys. I like how you connected it to the cultural diamond because the diamond is to show everyone being equal but in this movie, it shows that girls and boys are not equal. This movie also shows that girls can play sports like guys and they also can be like them. The movie shows the struggles of her having difficulties trying to be manly, especially the scene with her having the tampon. The movie has depth to show that girls can be like boys and I think it sends a lot of strong messages to people who watch it.

  5. Hi Melissa!
I think picking this movie as your artifact was a great idea since it uses exaggerated gender roles. Most teen movies are often times exaggerated in order to target a larger audience including teenagers. I really enjoyed how you analyzed the movie and considered different points that I would not have thought of. Thank you for sharing! :)
